So here's a quick synopsis of what has been happening and what is to come:
1. Found out I'm in the top five for the Imagine Me Beyond What You See Mannequin Competition (Still waiting to hear the final results)
2. I was in the Vagina Monologues last weekend
3. I'll be in a gallery with my classmates in March for our "Wandering" sculpture studio class
4. Started my first really collaborative piece last week-details will come as it unfolds
5. I'll be in a fashion show modeling for a friend of mine in April
6. Applied for an internship for the summer in Minnesota and am waiting to hear back
7. Metal working seems to get more enticing everyday

Sculpture Final Complete!

This is for my concrete culture class. the final assignment is to make a site specific piece dealing with concepts of the city we encountered on our walk in which we "wandered" around the city. I found it quite interesting in this alley that a new door had been put in place of an old door on a rundown building but the door has not been completely installed and does nothing to fix the problems within the building and the alley other than create a facade of rehabilitating the building. Out of this I came up with making my own door to install that was purely decorative and served absolutely no purpose and led no where.

Materials: Door, glue, silver sequins, flat black latex paint

So I made this one last summer or perhaps even during my senior year. can't remember at this point. but it was for an awesome woman named Mary who gave me my first commission! A midsummer update

So I've been working as an intern at Elsewhere Artist Collaborative in North Carolina and I'm learning all sorts of things I could end up doing if, by chance, I don't end up making it as a good old-fashioned studio artist. I must admit I'm really starting to miss creating on a regular basis. I thought I'd take the summer off and be so happy just not worrying about making anything...no sir, about a month in now and I'm getting so antsy to just make anything. Yesterday at my internship I got to show my blog and some images of my work that really gets me excited, needless to say, I'm really excited about where I'm headed.

In other news, I got a call this morning that I sold a painting. Remember this one? Ok so maybe it is only to my aunt but perhaps it's a sign of good things to come! I also spent the weekend painting an apartment. I'm seeing new possibilities everywhere I turn! great feeling

So now that the award was finally given out I'm allowed to announce it: I WON! Here are some pictures of me out in Phoenix when I was accepting my award. First art competition, first place...not too shabby.

This one means a lot. I met a bunch of therapists, writers, advocates, etc. from the eating disorder world which unfortunately I'm a member. Now I'm turning that into a good thing and making great things out of my past.

The bottom picture is of me and Jenni Schaefer, an inspiration to all of us in recovery and her books have gotten me through some rough patches while on the journey. So happy to finally meet her

I have heard “it’s not about the food” a countless number of times at this point in my recovery. There is so much beyond the food, but for years I refused to acknowledge the pain that I masked by not eating or by purging. In an attempt to show that to the world through my art, I made the outside layer of the female form out of silverware which simultaneously hides the female form beneath it, and draws attention to the outward appearance of the female.

So the assignment in drawing class was to focus on including text in the drawing. The teacher tacked up clippings from newspaper, magazines, etc. and we were told to either draw it as we saw it or to be creative and come up with our own text...I came up with my own.

Hey Everyone,

So I'm here at MICA and loving every minute! I don't yet have any finished pieces but I thought I'd update you as to what's in the works.

For my Sculptural Forms class (the one that demands I think way outside my comfort zone) the assignment is to make something out of recycled cardboard. What did I choose to make? A Toilet. Yep, you read that correctly. Some have mentioned that perhaps that's my eating disorder coming through and maybe they are right but I am having a blast using the band saw, jigsaw, drill, glue, rulers, etc. I can't wait for you to see it when it's complete but here are some picture of it in progress (basically just the bowl is done at this point-but that's the most exciting part anyway)

Well everyone, college has begun and classes are getting underway. I've never been so happy to go to class! I wake up with a smile on my face and dance all day long! Pictures will come once assignments are more aesthetically pleasing. As for poetry, I've been writing a lot and am about to add one or two to my poetry page so please check it out.

Hi everyone who checks out my blog!

Today I've decided to turn my favorite piece of art to-date into a collection and I'm starting the second installment. The collection is called Breaking Distorted Delusions (BDD for short). The first piece is called "Dysmorphia" and hangs in a therapist's office in Morristown. The second piece will be called "Fraying at the Edges" and will hopefully be completed by next Friday. I'm hoping to expand the collection and make it big and great (ranging in size from pocket mirrors to full length mirrors).

I would love to get these pieces into people's homes and encourage them to use these rather than nonbroken mirrors. The purpose of this collection is to promote positive body image and help people get in touch with their inner selves by no longer focusing on their "perfect" reflection. So I have a new portrait I've been working on for a little under a week now and it's starting to resemble a human being (it was touch-and-go there for awhile) so I thought I'd put it up as is so far for ya'll to see. It's a ten year old girl (kind of made her a bit older looking) so we'll see what I can do to make her look her age in this portrait. Happy early birthday Lila.

Life After Books

I just finished a portrait of one of my sister's roommates in college and I'll be sending it overseas to Japan just as soon as it is dry (who knows how long that will be). Pictures will follow once she receives it and can see it in person. I am quite excited about how it turned out and I must say I am very proud of my progress in the past few months.

Mother's Day
A few years back my sister and I bought lilac bushes for my mother for Mother's Day (still confused why that isn't a plural possessive holiday) and this was the first year they ever bloomed-just in time for the holiday. I worked on this painting the past three days. It's oil paint on gessoed masonite.

Punctilious
Here's a charcoal drawing I did of a friend of mine. I'm very pleased with how this turned out. I toned the paper, pulled out highlights with a chamois, and then added darks with vine, and pulled more out with a kneaded eraser

My Guardian Angel
So I finally fired my piece after months of drying out slowly. Once it was fired in the kiln, it came out completely white and I used brown shoe polish to create the finish. I used small brushes (it required several since the bristles quickly deteriorate) and clothes to wipe off excess. She will be on display in my school for awhile now and afterwards will take up residence in my dining room with a portrait bust my sister completed with the same finishing technique.

Modern Disco Ball
Here is a light I created. It's clear plastic cups with small binder clips holding them together. the reflections it creates are magnificent and look different each moment of the day. The texture is really awesome to view from underneath. I keep it with all the binder clips pointed out so it's very textured, but for a more refined look, one can put all the clips in and keep it more spherical.

I think this piece lends itself nicely to what my next statement will be. If anyone is ever interested in purchasing my work or having a similar piece made please feel free to contact me or post on here. Thanks

Mother and Daughter
Here is a drawing of Robyn and her daughter Talia looking at each other. It is done in charcoal. I first toned the paper and then pulled out the highlights and put in the darker darks and this is the finished product. Hope you like it Robyn!
In addition to drawing, painting, and sculpting, I also write poetry in my spare time. I love when I'm able to incorporate one of my poem's into my artwork. On the side of this drawing it says "Your mother will always be there,
With no extra room in her heart to spare.
She'll love you from now until forever;
No matter what you'll be her most prized treasure.
Through every adventure her love will endure;
Every bump and bruise she can easily cure
With a simple kiss
and an 'I love you miss'"

Here are some sculpture I've done. Three in clay and one was made in wax and then casted in bronze (a long and laborious process-but I'm glad I've had the experience). Thanks Mr. M for making us do them!
I chose to just include one view of each figure but if any one is interested and wants to see more I have three more views of each.
The first two are "sketches" and meant to be rough and gestural. They were my first experience with the nude body! quite intimidating but translating from 3-D to 3-D was a great way to first meet the new subject matter.

I used gesso on her after she was fired and then bowling alley wax! great idea for anyone who is looking for a new finish for their pieces. I recently showed my sister how to do this and she loved it for the portrait bust she did. It's great!

Self-Portrait

Reaction to Middlesex and Lolita
I had just finished reading Middlesex and Lolita. Both are amazing! Anyway, I finished reading both and had ideas swirling around in my mind's eye about sensuality and sexuality in young adolescents and then ideas about gender identity. This is what I produced. Only male peacock's have the colorful tails, yet the one in the painting is on a female. Are we all really the same?

After the Fight

Here's an oil painting I completed of my boyfriend at the time. I tried to capture the sorrow he was feeling as we had just had a fight. I focused more on the emotion of it (hence the blue) than being completely accurate with each detail.

Above it All

A little acrylic painting I did while sitting on the top of a hill looking out the front of my house. The trees were gorgeous and full of life as fall changed the leaves into all these magnificent colors. The focus for the assignment was to work on two types of perspective.
